CLAYGARD® shale inhibitor is a low-molecular-weight amphoteric polymer used to inhibit hydration of reactive clay and reduce swelling of sensitive shales exposed to water-based drilling fluids. It is suitable in fresh water, seawater and high salinity brines up to 400°F. CLAYGARD® works to minimize problems such as excessive dilution rates, increased torque and drag, high surge and swab pressures and bit balling. It can be used in mud systems containing low concentrations of active solids, bentonite-free systems or freshly built low-solids systems containing a minimum amount of pre-hydrated bentonite.
